Bilyana Dimitrova

Bilyana Dimitrova is a photographer that focuses on the built environment, documenting the private and public spaces that we inhabit. Her photographs depict environments created by both professionals and ordinary people. Her work for architects and interior designers has been widely published in the US and abroad, in books and in magazines such as Architectural Digest, Architectural Record, Detail, Interni, The New York Times and Metropolis- where she was the photo editor.

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Bilyana Dimitrova immigrated to the US with her parents as a young child. She grew up in New York City and studied Art, from an early age, at the city’s specialized art schools. After studying at Bard College with photographers Stephen Shore and Larry Fink, she received on-the-job training, working for top architectural photographer Paul Warchol among others. In 2000 she began shooting regularly for the "Shelter" column of The Village Voice, and in 2001 she started her own architectural photography practice. The project from which To Each His Home emerges melds Dimitrova's academic training and professional interests, and represents more than eight years of work.
